Imagine yourself as a model. You stroll down the runway in a beautiful black gown. Your hair flowing in the breeze. All eyes on you in the perfect gold detailed dress. The crowd sees the gorgeous line and style of each dress. The only thing they don’t see is the amount of work that goes behind the creation of such a beautiful master piece. The movie, Dior and I, does a remarkable job in showing the world the amount of time, work, and effort fashion houses go through to produce such marvelous pieces.
In Frederic Tcheng solo debut, Dior and I, Tcheng introduces the world to the behind the scenes making of a houte couture collection at the Christian Dior fashion house in Europe. With only eight weeks till the show, the movie takes us into the life of the new artistic creative director Raf Simons and his process of creating a beautiful collection but still keeping the tradition and history of Christian Dior.
Seeking inspiration from art galleries and paintings Simmons turns to the people of the atelier to create his vision.
This movie is truly spectacular. Never before has anyone been able to see into the lives of a fashion house and see what kind of work goes into every last detail. When the models walk the runway people typically congratulate and applaud the designer or director but after seeing this movie we should really be applauding the 40 some people working for the house that slave away behind the scenes hand sewing the gowns and garments into a piece of art. Without them the designer or director wouldn’t have a collection to show.
What these houses produce is simply amazing. It’s interesting to see the last minute changes and alterations these people do in such a short amount of time. We see in the movie that sometimes time is constricted so much that there is no time to dye a simple blazer. Instead, spray painting it in the middle of a garden is the best way to get the garment to look the way the director wants.
If you haven’t already seen this amazing movie I suggest you do. If we are being honest here, the first time I saw Dior and I I got chills while watching it. Not too long ago I saw it in one of my fashion classes where I realized that the documentary was so good not to share. If you want to take a break this weekend from studying, sit back, grab the popcorn and let Dior and I amaze you as you watch it on Netflix. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
